TSUZURA was a popular storage box for keeping clothing in, often taken as part of bride’s trousseau around Edo period.
First the four sided basket box is woven with 1mm-thick bamboo strips.
The box gets covered with WASHI (japanesse rice paper) to strengthen the basket, one layer in the inside and two on the outside, with FUNORI (japanese glue made from seaweed) mixed with KAKISHIBU (persimmon tannin juice, which resists insects).
It is finished with “cashew URUSHI”, resin lacquer made from cashew nuts, which became more popular as an alternative to originally used URUSHI lacquer due to a high rise in the price of URUSHI in the 1970’s.
